Hardware/SSD
Since I decided to shoot in RAW I realized I needed more quick access storage.
On my Arch Linux PC I had 2 very old 128+256GB SSDs and a PCIe 4.0 NVME for the system.
The 2TB Crucial SSD external drive had some problems and hitches and was sometimes very slow at transferring files (I later discovered that I should have connected it to PC back socket the higher-performance). I also have two very cheap Toshiba HDDs and I have some security backups.
I only have photos taken from smartphones on the cloud but I haven’t put those from Fujifilm.
Taking advantage of Black Friday, I purchased a 4 TB Crucial SSD MX500 unit. I have just copied USB SSD content d and Aftershot RAW archive.
Why not second NVME?
I could have installed a second NVME disk (not PCIe 4.0) obtaining stellar access speeds but I would have to work hardly between the heat sink and copper.
The boxed Crucial SSDs seem more robust to me also in terms of future cases trasferring. Second NVME installing would have also disabled an sata SSD for a reason related to the particular Asus B550 card and would have brought me problems.
I had to stick another power cable into my modular PSU and a new SATA cable, I had a problem after adding the drive to fstab which caused PC failed to start, I had to select the boot priority again (I still have to fully understand what happened).
Now everything seems to be working fine, I finally have a solid space to store my files.
I am aware of the risks of data loss on an unpowered SSD and will therefore make external backups from time to time. But it’s nice to have this archive always ready.
Bad packaging
I have always had Crucial SSDs and this time I was a little disappointed by the packaging. I spent a lot for this disk which arrived from Crucial in a paper envelope with a bit of bubble wrap, the cardboard was very thin, unlike of the MX300 and M4 it did not have the screws and the adapter but only a plastic spacer whose use the tutorial does not explain.
Luckily I had the right countersunk screws.
